Is Being a Top 10 City a Good Thing? Not for Pierre
When it comes to state capital cities, South Dakota's has a few things working against it.
First and foremost, Pierre's location, which somewhat is equidistant from the major population centers in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, is extremely inconvenient for just about everyone to get to, with the closest interstate 35 miles away.
It also suffers from a lack of people, just 13,954 at last count, making it the second smallest capital city in America, trailing only Montpelier, Vermont (population 7,988).
And while there are some great hunting and fishing opportunities in the area, there are no major tourist attractions in the greater Pierre area to lure people in for a visit.
When you consider all of that, it's no big surprise that South Dakota's capital city is one of the country's least memorable.
U.S. Betting Report is sharing the results of a Sporcle quiz on capital cities. In it, participants were given 10 minutes to name all 50 capitals and Pierre was one of the top ten most forgettable.
Just 68 percent of quiz takers remembered the name of South Dakota's capital city, which was the seventh worst overall.
