How Would You Rate the Condition of Streets in Sioux Falls?
Like they do in a lot of other places, the streets in Sioux Falls take a beating on a regular basis.
From extreme weather fluctuations to a nearly constant flow of ever-increasing traffic, the condition of our roadways can vary wildly from good to bad to downright ugly depending on where you drive South Dakota's largest city.
So how do the roads here measure up?
Last fall, the City of Sioux Falls commissioned the self-proclaimed 'pavement condition survey experts' at Austin, Texas-based Roadway Asset Services to analyze the condition of the City’s street network.
To rate the condition of roads, the company uses vehicles equipped with lasers, cameras, GPS, and other measuring sensors.
Their verdict?
Sioux Falls streets received a pavement condition index of 73 out of 100, which lands in the higher end of the national average range of 65 to 75.
The pavement management survey results will now be used by the Sioux Falls Public Works Engineering and Street Maintenance Divisions to prioritize and budget city streets for preservation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
In case you're wondering, Sioux Falls has more than 3,455 lane miles of roadway in the city, which is the equivalent of building a two-lane road between the city and San Diego, California. The value of the City’s street pavement alone, not counting sidewalks, utilities, amenities, or other features, is over $2.6 billion.
