Enjoy a Free Movie Matinee at Sioux Falls’ State Theatre
You don't get a lot of opportunities to enjoy free entertainment these days, but you'll have your chance later this month in downtown Sioux Falls.
August 19 marks the return of the Free Monday Movie at the State Theater on Phillips Avenue.
This time the movie is a matinee, starting at 2:00 PM.
The event is sponsored by AARP South Dakota.
This month's feature film is Patch Adams.
This movie was originally released on Christmas Day in 1998 and stars the late Robin Williams.
It is loosely based on the life story of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams and the book Gesundheit: Good Health Is a Laughing Matter by Adams and Maureen Mylander.
The plot follows the life and career of Adams, who discovers that using humor in his practice, rather than doctor-centered psychotherapy, better helps his fellow patients and provides him with a new purpose in life.
The film was a bit hit at the box office, grossing $202.3 million.
In 1999, Williams was nominated for a Golden Globe (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical) and an American Comedy Award (
The Sioux Falls showing is open to AARP members and non-members alike. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance.
