Dallas Police Force Sees Huge Spike in Applications
The Dallas Police Department has seen an incredible jump in officer applications following the mass shooting that took place on July 7.
Reuters reported that in the 12 days following the shooting, which killed five Dallas police officers, more than 465 applications were submitted to the department. This was a 344% increase from the 136 applications during a similar time frame last month.
Earlier this year, the Dallas Police Department was struggling to recruit new officers, even having to postpone police academy classes due to the lack of applicants. The decline was partially due to more competitive salaries in nearby cities.
The surge in applications came after Dallas Police Chief David Brown's speech during a press conference last week. Brown asked people to become "a part of the solution" and apply for a job. “We are hiring,” he said. “Get out of that protest line and put an application in. We’ll put you in your neighborhood and we will help you resolve some of the problems you’re protesting about.”
