Cameron Monger hit a solo homer and a two-run double to pace the Sioux Falls Canaries’ offense to a 4-3 win over the Gary RailCats on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Sioux Falls starter Dylan Thompson didn’t fair too badly against the Cats on Wednesday, giving up three runs over seven full innings of work, scattering eight hits over those innings.

The Cats jumped out to an early lead in the second. Back-to-back walks to Alex Crosby and Jaime Del Valle started the frame. Colin Willis reached on a fielder’s choice, and a bad throw to first allowed Crosby to score from second, putting Gary up 1-0.

The Birds powered back in the fifth. Cameron Monger led off the frame with a solo blast. Fiala matched him three pitches later with a solo shot of his own to put the Birds in front 2-1.

The Birds pushed their lead to three in the sixth. Jake Taylor reached with a one-out walk. Blake Schmit hit a two-out single to put runners at first and second. Monger drove both Taylor and Schmit in with a double, then advanced to third on an error by the second baseman, giving the Canaries a 4-1 edge.

Gary wouldn’t go down without a fight, however. In the seventh, Chase Harris singled with one away, then stole second. Andy DeJesus doubled to score Harris, then Reggie Wilson followed suit with a double of his own, scoring DeJesus, cutting the Canaries lead to 4-3.

However, scoreless innings from reliever Madison Boer and closer Jose Ortega notched his fourth save of the year to ensure a Canaries’ victory on Wednesday night.

The Canaries host their final home game of 2016 on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. in their final game against Gary before closing out the season on the road in Kansas City over Labor Day weekend.
