Brad Keselowski Wins NASCAR at Atlanta Motor Speedway
Race number two for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series was at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday (2/24). This time it was Brad Keselowski taking the checkered flag and the victory.
Keselowski scores the first win of the season for himself and for the new Ford Mustang in the Cup Series. This was his second time winning at Atlanta and 60th time winning in Roger Penske cars counting all series.
That big number breaks a tie with the late Mark Donohue. To honor Donohue, Keselowski will wear the yellow Donohue helmet at the next race.
As for the Atlanta race, Keselowski held off Martin Truex Jr. in the final laps. Truex was charging hard after dealing with lapped traffic.
Keselowski, who was recovering from a flu illness that prevented him from participating in practice the day before, was nursing his car toward the end of the race.
One major concern was engine overheat. He ran across some debris earlier in the race that caused the engine temperature to soar. The other concern was tires, as multiple drivers were having to make unscheduled pit stops for new rubber.
Keselowski had held the lead since the final restart, then after conserving his car and Truex closing in, he put the hammer down for the final lap and drove to the win.
Kurt Busch came in third, Kevin Harvick fourth and Clint Bowyer was fifth. See where your driver finished.
