The world was shocked by the news out of Arkansas last weekend, where a husband and wife were randomly attacked and killed in front of two of their children.

Now comes word that the victims had just moved to the area from South Dakota.

Random Attack

Last Saturday (July 26), 43-year-old Clinton David Brink and 41-year-old Cristen Amanda Brink were hiking with two of their children at Devil’s Den, a 2,500-acre state park near West Fork, about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock, when they encountered Andrew James McGann. For no apparent reason, McGann stabbed and killed Clinton Brink while Cristen Brink rushed her kids to safety.

According to Associated Press, Cristen later returned to the scene of the incident, where she was stabbed and killed by McGann.

5-Day Manhunt

Arkansas State Police arrested McGann late Wednesday (July 30) afternoon, at a barbershop in Springdale, about 30 miles north of the park. He is being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center, where, in an interview with authorities, he admitted to killing the couple.

McGann made his first court appearance today (August 1) and has been charged with two counts of capital murder.

South Dakota Connection

Now we are learning that the Brinks and their three daughters had recently moved to the area from Rapid City and were living in Prairie Grove in northwest Arkansas. Clinton Brink was supposed to start working as a milk delivery driver this week. Cristen Brink had been licensed as a nurse in Montana and South Dakota.

The children are safe and in the custody of relatives, according to police.

LOOK: What 25 Historic Battlefields Look Like Today

The following is an examination of what became of the sites where America waged its most important and often most brutal campaigns of war. Using a variety of sources, Stacker selected 25 historically significant battlefields in American history. For each one, Stacker investigated what happened there when the battles raged as well as what became of those hallowed grounds when the fighting stopped.

These are the battlefields that defined the United States military’s journey from upstart Colonial rebels to an invincible global war machine.
