9 South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota Cities Are among Windiest in U.S.
When it comes to wind, there's no place like the Upper Midwest.
We've got so much blowing around here that nearly one-fifth of the places on a list by What's Up Newp of the Windiest Cities in America are in the Tri-State (South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota) area.
And one is in the top five.
With an average annual wind speed of 12 miles per hour, Rochester, Minnesota is the fifth windiest city in America. April is the windiest month there (13.6 miles per hour on average).
Two other Minnesota cities are in the Top 50.
- Duluth (10 miles per hour) is 34th.
- Minneapolis/St. Paul (9.6 miles per hour) is 42nd.
In the Tri-Sate area, Iowa has the most cities on the windy list.
- Sioux City (10.4 miles per hour) is 21st.
- Dubuque (10.3 miles per hour) is 24th.
- Waterloo (9.8 miles per hour) is 37th.
- Des Moines (9.8 miles per hour) is 38th.
A pair of South Dakota cities blew into the Top 50.
- Rapid City (10.6 miles per hour) is 19th.
- Sioux Falls (10.2 miles per hour) is 28th.
Nationally, Texas and Wyoming dominate the windiest cities with five of the top six on the list.
