11 Items That Are Illegal to Mail in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota
Ignoring the obvious things that cannot be mailed in the United States such as explosives, ammunition, fireworks, gasoline, etc., there are some everyday household items that are illegal to drop in the mail. Some of these are quite surprising - and some are simply common sense.
- 1
Nail Polish
It is considered a flammable substance and therefor cannot be mailed.
- 2
Cremated Remains
Please do not send uncle Bert's ashes by mail.
- 3
Live Pets
Never try to mail a live animal. Oddly enough, mailing bees is legal but with certain packaging guidelines set by the USPS.
- 4
Air Bags
Not exactly an everyday household item but worth noting.
- 5
Perfume
Because many perfumes contain alcohol, you can only send colognes and perfumes by ground shipping.
- 6
Glue
According the the USPS, the sender of glue through the mail system is responsible for knowing the adhesive's "flashpoint" and this sounds like something a scientist would know so let's stay clear of this one.
- 7
Dry Ice
Strangely, it is not entirely illegal to mail dry ice, but it does require special ventilation packaging and very specific shipping instructions.
- 8
Mercury Thermometers
The mercury within is toxic metal that’s a shiny, silver liquid at room temperature, and therefor too dangerous to mail.
- 9
Matches
Risking ignition during transport, matches are illegal to drop in the mail.
- 10
Hairspray
Actually, all aerosol cans including spray paint, can combust during pressure changes.
- 11
Marijuana
You simply can't do this and would fall under the "common sense" rule. However, if you want to mail a hemp-based product or a CBD product, you can check out the guidelines outlined under Publication 52, Section 453 at the USPS website
