Sioux Falls Students Start School Day with Hike

Dan Peters/Results Radio

Over 100 children and parents took a walk from McKennan Park to Sioux Falls Lutheran School near 37th and Minnesota to start the day.

The journey took just over a half hour and Melanie Nelson who teaches Physical Education at the school told KSOO News it’s a great way to start the day.

“Research has shown that if we can get students’ brains active throughout the day with recess and P.E., kids learn better. That’s what we’re trying to promote. We also want kids to eat healthier meals. Walking to school is part of a national trend and we selected today as the day.”

More than just exercise is in play as Nelson highlighted the bonding experience and the faith lesson.

“It’s about relationships. Parents are walking with their kids and staff integrating with students outside of regular school day. Our bodies are temples to God and we like to promote that as well. We’re taking care of ourselves to better serve our Lord.”

The mile-long walk is part of an effort Nelson calls “Learn, Move, Grow” which also recently encouraged students to take their parents to P.E. class at the school.
