A moose that had been spotted several times this week in Iowa has apparently drowned in an area lake.

KUOO Radio in Spirit Lake is reporting that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has confirmed that there is evidence of a bull moose drowning on East Okoboji Lake.

Authorities believe the two-year-old bull moose fell through the ice.

It is believed to be the same moose that had been frequenting the area since November and had been seen swimming in Big Spirit Lake and Marble Lake.

Wednesday (December 6), the moose was spotted near the Spirit Lake Library and later standing on thin ice on East Lake Okoboji, just off of Francis Sites.

According to a statement from the Iowa DNR:

'The Arnolds Park Okoboji Fire & Rescue will attempt to extract the animal, and then the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will transport it to Iowa State University for examination.'
