Weapons Found, Lockdown Continues at South Dakota Penitentiary
The South Dakota State Penitentiary and Jameson Annex remained locked down in Sioux Falls.
Department of Corrections officials have announced that searches of both facilities this week have uncovered a number of handmade weapons, other items that can be fashioned into or used as weapons, and unauthorized electronic equipment.
The discoveries come after the penitentiary and annex were locked down, September 15. Officials say the action was a 'proactive security measure to implement a full campus search and seizure for dangerous contraband. It was not a response to an assault, fight, or disturbance- and no staff or inmates were injured.'
Any potential criminal activity is being referred to the Department of Criminal Investigation.
During the lockdown, inmates are receiving all meals and prescribed medications in their cells and have access to commissary services as well as medical and mental health professionals.
