UFFDA! Cast Your Vote in the ‘Gosh Darn Minnesota Phrase-Off’

Over the years, the vernacular of the average Minnesotan has become as unique as the North Star State itself.

The colloquialisms cover a wide range of topics, from the weather, food and drink, the Vikings, and even some toned-down alternatives to some much saltier language.

So which is the quintessential Minnesota utterance?

Twin Cities TV station KARE 11 is looking to settle the issue once and for all with the Gosh Darn Minnesota Phrase-Off.

They've come up with their own version of the 'Sweet 16' with an opening round bracket that pits some of Minnesota's greatest hits head-to-head.

• "You betcha" vs. "That's different"
• "Oh ya, no, for sure" vs. "For Pete's sake"
• "Just gonna scootch right past ya" vs. "Oh fer cute"
• "Bag" (but pronounced in Minnesotan) vs. "Duck duck gray duck"
• "Ope!" vs. "Don'tcha know"
• "There's always next year" vs. "Oh I s'pose"
• "Uff da" vs. "Pop"
• "Jeez Louise" vs. "Whelp" (with a slap of the knee)

Voting begins August 21 and will last for two days in each of the four rounds.

The winning phrase will be announced August 27, just prior to the second weekend of the Minnesota State Fair.
