Coming from a family who gets attached to furniture, and almost any and everything else, basement storage of items hasn't been a choice, it's been a way of life.
Our dad collected statuary and very artsy liquor bottles (like the Pietà replica and beautiful jade duck sitting on my piano right now). Mom collected books and of course, anything we gave her.
Those items included costume jewelry, kitschy items like a gold-plated bunny bank, (I found it at a jewelry store for the whopping price of $10, which back then I had saved for quite a while), and books, lots and lots of books!

And don't even get me started on the stuff my sisters and I collect! So, needless to say, when I came across the information in a Reader's Digest article on things you should keep out of your basement my concern level was raised.
Things like this need to be kept out of the basement mostly because they draw insects and vermin to them, end up smelling awful or disintegrate due to moisture.
