Sioux Falls Police and SWAT team members spent nearly eight hours Wednesday evening and into early Thursday morning in a standoff at 513 S. Western Avenue.

They had chased a subject on foot into the triplex at about 6:30pm where reports were that he had barricaded himself in the basement with a gun.

The area around the residence was blocked off by law enforcement in a several block radius and neighbors were eventually evacuated.

An unnamed person was arrested in connection with the incident early in the evening, but police used bullhorns to attempt to talk to the suspect through the evening and even used a flash bang shortly before 11pm to get the suspect to surrender.

Finally at approximately 1:50am, 25-year old Derek Jordan Arapahoe surrendered without further incident and was arrested on felony warrants, one for failure to appear and one for possession of a controlled substance.

The Sioux Falls man may face additional charges in connection with the standoff.
