The South Dakota State Penitentiary and Jameson Annex were placed on lockdown status overnight in Sioux Falls.

Around 11:30 PM,Sunday (September 15), both facilities were locked down.

At the time, the South Dakota Department of Corrections issued a public notice:

'The South Dakota State Penitentiary and Jameson Annex are being placed on lockdown status. We do not know at this time how long the lockdown will last.

We will be managing phone service for offenders for the duration of the lockdown. This may include periods of phone service being disabled temporarily. All visits, with the exception of previously approved and scheduled special visits, are canceled during this time. Attorney visits will not be affected.

Because this is related to security and operations, we will not be responding to further questions and inquiries during the lockdown. If the release of additional information is warranted, the information will be provided on the agency website and social media channels.'

No further information has been provided.
