South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem in Fight with Ben & Jerry’s over Mt. Rushmore Tweet
First, it was applying for a permit to include fireworks at the 2024 Independence Day Celebration at the national monument, after the National Park Service denied fireworks there for the 14th time in the last 15 years in 2023.
Now the Governor is tangling over Mount Rushmore with a surprising adversary.
The tweet included a link to a page on their website, which includes historical information they claim supports their position that the land, originally known as Tunkasila Sakpe (the Six Grandfathers), was taken from the Lakota Sioux tribe after the U.S government broke a pair treaties from 1851 and 1868.
The page also includes a link to a petition on the Lakota People's Law Project Action Center website which calls on the federal to:
'...right historical wrongs, and to move our society forward. The United States must return what its own judges admit it has stolen. Return the Black Hills to the Great Sioux Nation.'
Needless to say, Governor Noem isn't a fan of the message.
Appearing on Fox News' Fox & Friends Thursday (July 6), she called Ben & Jerry's 'a bunch of liberal Vermont businessmen who think they know everything about this country and haven’t studied our history.'
