For those of us old enough to remember when the price of gas hovered around $1 a gallon, the notion that what we're seeing at the pump these days qualifies as 'cheap' is tough to swallow, but considering where prices have been, things seem to be moving in the right direction.

But, like real estate, the price you pay for gas is based on three things: location, location, location, which is good news if you're filling your tank in South Dakota.

Tracking Prices at the Pump

The latest research on gas prices comes from a survey conducted by Monster Fairings, which analyzed pricing information from across the U.S. using data from AAA. Besides the average price for a gallon of regular in each state, the study also factored in other grades (like premium, mid-grade, and diesel) for a combined overall average.

How Does South Dakota Rank?

After crunching the numbers, the study found the price at the pump in the Mount Rushrmore State was one of nine states under $3.25 per gallon, tied for seventh lowest in the nation (with Kansas) at $3.23 per gallon.

Cheapest Gas in America

  • Oklahoma – $3.07
  • Mississippi – $3.17
  • Texas – $3.19
  • Louisiana – $3.21
  • Arkansas – $3.22
  • Missouri – $3.22
  • South Dakota – $3.23
  • Kansas – $3.23
  • Nebraska – $3.25
  • Iowa – $3.27

At the other end of the spectrum, California topped the list of the most expensive total average price at $4.94, followed by Washington at $4.87, Hawaii at $4.85, Oregon at $4.45, Nevada at $4.13, and Alaska at $4.10.

Good News at the Pump

This week, the national average price for a gallon of gas dropped below $3.00 to just $2.97, according to fuel pricing website GasBuddy. This marked the first time the cost has dipped below that mark since Dec. 29, 2024.

Haunted Locations and Scary Legends Around Sioux Falls

Halloween is steeped in scary traditions. Trick-or-Treating, frightening costumes, local actors in "haunted" houses, and the pitch-black darkness of area corn mazes.

However, if we set out to find the real haunted areas what would we find? Over the last 30 years that I have lived in Sioux Falls, a few locations still gain attention as being haunted.

And yes, a handful of thrill-seeking people will show up on our favorite eerie night for what could be a viral video moment or experience a misty phantom first-hand.
Let's take a little tour of the more famous hauntings around Sioux Falls. Turn on the lights and cue the Cowardly Lion: "I do believe in spooks, I do believe in spooks..."

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
