Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken Honored For Youth Mentoring Efforts
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken has been honored as the State & Local Public Service honoree for the 2026 Excellence in Mentoring awards by MENTOR, a national nonprofit organization that champions youth mentoring.
The organization recognizes mentoring leaders across the United States who go above and beyond to positively impact the lives of young people. MENTOR cited TenHaken’s influence in the mentoring field, noting his direct and indirect impact on young people.
During his time as mayor, TenHaken has called on residents, businesses, faith communities, and nonprofits to step forward as mentors. Through the creation of the Sioux 52 Mentoring Initiative, he has encouraged public, private, and nonprofit partners to help make Sioux Falls a “City of Mentors.” The effort has resulted in hundreds of new mentors and dozens of programs working collaboratively.

In addition to mentoring an elementary school student each week, TenHaken launched the Mayor’s Youth Council in 2021. Each year, a small group of high school juniors and seniors meets with the mayor to share their perspectives and have a voice in city government.
TenHaken has also focused on mentoring and support for individuals transitioning from incarceration. With the South Dakota State Penitentiary located in Sioux Falls, he has advocated for educational programming and services that give those leaving the facility a chance at success in the community.
TenHaken was honored at the National Mentoring Summit last week (February 5th) in Washington, D.C.
Mentors are still needed throughout Sioux Falls, and many organizations offer opportunities to get involved. For a list of organizations seeking volunteers or for more information, call the Helpline Center at 211 or visit helplinecenter.org/volunteer-connections/sioux52.
