Ronnie James Dio. For rock fans, you think of the 'horns' \m/ \m/, and that amazing rock voice that powered Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and his own band, Dio.

But long before he belted out rock classics like Man on a Silver Mountain, Heaven & Hell, and Last in Line, he performed in bands called The Vegas Kings, Ronnie and The Rumblers, and Ronnie and the Redcaps.

Dio, who was still using his real name of Ronaldo James Giovanni Padavona, was a 15 year old in Cortland, New York. It was 1957. Before metal. Hell, before rock. It was about the same time that a young John Lennon was putting together a skiffle group called the Quarrymen in Liverpool.

Take a listen to this. Yes, it really is Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals onAn Angel is Missing.

I don't know about you, but I need a palate cleanser after that. How aboutRainbow in the Dark.
