SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – A man has been taken into custody following a standoff in central Sioux Falls that forced authorities to close streets and locked down at least one school.

Local media report that the man was taken into custody shortly before 6 p.m. Monday.

The standoff started several hours earlier in the 400 block of North Indiana Avenue near Sixth Street.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens says officers initially responded to a call about a suicidal person that turned into someone being barricaded. The man had been by himself and had a gun.

Students who normally walk home from Whittier Middle School had been kept inside until police said it was OK to release them.
