Move over Orange, Pink May Be Coming to South Dakota Hunting
For years, hunters in South Dakota have had just one choice for colors when it comes to hunter safety.
Blaze Orange.
But if one current bill continues to make its way through the South Dakota Legislature, fluorescent orange may have some company in the fields.
House Bill 1228 would allow exterior hunting garments (defined as a hat, cap, shirt,
jacket, vest, coverall, or poncho) to also be fluorescent pink.
This week (Tuesday), the bill made its way out of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee after an 11-1 vote. and now goes to the House of Representatives. The lone dissenting vote was cast by Representative Randy Gross, (R) Elkton, who said, “I’ll be voting no because I think there is value in consistency.”
The current law states that all hunters in South Dakota hunters (except when hunting turkey, mountain lion, or duck) must wear orange above the waist to increase their visibility to other hunters. A violation is a Class 2 misdemeanor, which could result in a 30-day jail sentence and/or a $500 fine.
