Mayor’s Youth Council Really Needs Strong, Fearless Students!
The saying "children are our future" isn't just a saying. It's the way it is. You may wonder sometimes what Sioux Falls Youth are interested in besides hanging out with friends, texting, tik-toking, listening to their tunes, etc.
The truth is, that there are plenty of young people who not only care about the future for themselves, but for everyone.
Lots of them live right here in Sioux Falls. And these are the kids that the Sioux Falls Mayor's Youth Council is looking to recruit.
This project brings together juniors and seniors from our 5 high schools and also home schooled students.
They'll not only find new friends and common ground, but find their voices as they share their thoughts on community issues, learn leadership skills, and explore the intricacies of city goverment.
Applications are being taken now and are due by April 15, 2022. The 2022-2023 kickoff event will be on Saturday, September 10, and there is also a graduation in May of 2023.
There will be seven monthly meetings during the school year on Wednesday afternoons, plus other fun events and activities the students will be participating in.
This includes a community project, that will be the culmination of the work accomplished by the council over the year.
The Mayor's Youth Council will be led by a number of high level staff members from the Mayor's Office, the Sioux Falls Police Department, and the Street, Water, and Sustainability Departments, too.
Here are the eligibility requirements:
- Be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade during the 2022–2023 school year
- Live within Sioux Falls city limits
- Have a history of serving the community and a passion for helping others
- Submit a letter of recommendation written by a teacher or school staff member
So if you have a student you think should be part of this, or you are a student who is interesed in having your voice heard and your thoughts and ideas considered by others, apply now.
