Listen to Izzy Stradlin’s New Cover of J.J. Cale’s ‘Call Me the Breeze’
Izzy Stradlin has given fans an early Christmas gift with his latest release, a cover of J.J. Cale's "Call Me the Breeze."
"2016 Wrapping up soon! Thank you to everyone out there for all the support and enthusiasm for my past and present works," Stradlin tweeted Dec. 17. "Creatively speaking it has been a great year. One last song for 2016 on its way now."
Stradlin's cover features an assist from vocalist Lauren Barth and guitarist Jesse Aycock, who've performed together in addition to pursuing a number of separate musical projects. Aycock's also known as a member of Hard Working Americans, a band that features singer Todd Snider fronting a lineup that includes Duane Trucks, Neal Casal, and Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools; Barth, meanwhile, is currently in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign to fund the release of her first full-length solo effort, Forager.
Originally recorded for Cale's 1972 album Naturally, "Call Me the Breeze" has been a popular cover choice for a number of artists over the years: Stradlin's version follows well-known interpretations by a list of acts that includes Lynyrd Skynyrd and Johnny Cash. More recently, Cale's friend and sometime collaborator Eric Clapton covered it for his 2014 tribute album, The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale.
Stradlin hasn't released an LP since 2010's Wave of Heat but, as he alluded in his tweets, 2016 has been a fairly busy year on the musical front. Although it's as unclear as ever whether he intends to put out a record anytime soon, he's put out a series of singles this year. "Walk'n Song" arrived first, followed by "F.P. Money" (which reunited him with former Guns N' Roses bandmate Matt Sorum) and "To Be Alive."
