Homework and hitting sound like an odd combo. That's until you find out, that it has to do with kids getting homework help and learning about golf at the same time.

First Tee South Dakota has started a "Homework & Hitting" program funded in part by a United States Golf Association IDEA Grant. These sessions are being hosted by the Salvation Army at 900 North Cliff Avenue in Sioux Falls beginning on Tuesday, February 28.

First Tee South Dakota's mission is to help kids build the strength of character that can guide them through life's challenges- -

By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with life skills curriculum, we create learning experiences that build inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience that kids carry to everything they do.

In addition to golf, academic support is a really important element of the program. Participants spend the first 30 to 45 minutes of each session dedicated to homework and learning, followed by golf lessons on a virtual simulator. The children, also receive a meal at each session.

A similar program at the First Tee West Michigan chapter found that almost 90 percent of 574 participants from 2017-21 showed an improvement in their grades or reports from teachers, based on a survey of their parents.

The Coldest Temperatures in Sioux Falls History

When a polar vortex rolls through Sioux Falls, it can get even the heartiest dreaming of indoor fires, baking, and hot chocolate.

Mr. Bendo is tough enough but for the love of Pete, someone put a scarf on the Statue of David!

All this icy chatter had us wondering about the coldest days ever recorded in Sioux Falls. Here is the historical data from the National Weather Service with the coldest temps ever recorded in Sioux Falls since record-keeping began in 1893.
