As the federal government shutdown enters its sixth day, employees at the Sioux Falls National Weather Service continue reporting to work without paychecks.

The shutdown began on September 30, 2025, when Congress failed to pass necessary funding legislation.

While most federal operations have ground to a halt and thousands of workers face furloughs, meteorologists and support staff at our local NWS office maintain their round-the-clock watch over South Dakota's skies.

The Sioux Falls NWS posted this on their website..."The U.S. government is closed. However, because the information this website provides is necessary to protect life and property, this site will be updated and maintained during the federal government shutdown."

These essential employees continue issuing severe weather warnings, tracking storm systems, and providing the forecasts that farmers, businesses, and families depend on daily.

They monitor conditions that could spawn tornadoes, dangerous winter storms, and flash floods...threats that don't pause for political gridlock.
