It might feel like the dog days of summer are still a long way off, but in Sioux Falls, planning is already underway for what has become one of the city’s biggest neighborhood traditions, "National Night Out."

Registration is now officially open for 2026, giving Sioux Falls residents plenty of time to organize block parties, park gatherings, and neighborhood get-togethers ahead of the big night on Tuesday, August 4.

If you’ve never taken part, National Night Out is more than just a summer block party. It’s a nationwide initiative focused on strengthening the connection between local law enforcement and the communities they serve. Here in Sioux Falls, that often looks like kids playing in the yard, neighbors sharing food, and police officers stopping by to connect in a relaxed, friendly setting.

The City of Sioux Falls is once again making it easier and cheaper to host an event. According to Dakota News Now, the Parks & Recreation Department will waive reservation fees for city parks, though spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’ve got a favorite park in mind, it’s smart to lock it down sooner rather than later.

Planning to close off your street for a classic block party? Street closure permits will also be free. However, organizers should note they’ll still need to cover the cost of barricades through a private vendor.

To get your neighborhood officially on the map, you’ll need to reach out to Community Resource Officer Kyle Johnson at kyle.johnson@siouxfalls.gov. Be ready to share your event location, time, and organizer contact details.

If a park setting is more your speed, you can check availability by calling 605-367-8218. The deadline to coordinate park use is July 1, while overall registration for National Night Out in Sioux Falls runs through July 24.
