Police Seek Tips On $30,000 Copper Theft In Sioux Falls
Copper might not look like much when it’s tucked behind walls or sitting on gigantic wooden spools at the scene of a construction site, but these days it’s practically the shiny gold of the scrap world. And unfortunately, that makes it pretty attractive to thieves looking for a quick payday.
Across the country, and right here in South Dakota, copper theft has been on the rise in recent years.
Items like copper wiring, tubing, and piping have become popular targets because scrap yards are paying solid money for the metal. Right now, copper is hovering around $4.00 per pound, which may not sound like a fortune at first glance, but when you’re talking about hundreds of feet of wire, those dollars can start adding up quickly.

A Sioux Falls business learned that lesson the hard way earlier this week.
According to Dakota News Now, Sioux Falls Police were called to a business located near West Madison Street and North Louise Avenue on Wednesday, March 11, after employees discovered a large amount of copper wire had gone missing from the property.
The business reported that nearly 750 feet of copper wire had been stolen, with an estimated value of around $30,000. That’s a massive amount of wire to disappear overnight and a pretty expensive headache for the business involved.
The area around Madison and Louise is a busy part of Sioux Falls. Typically, it has a steady flow of traffic, which makes the theft even more surprising. Moving that much copper likely required time, tools, and possibly a vehicle, meaning someone may have seen something without realizing it.
At this point, Sioux Falls Police are still investigating the theft and have not identified any suspects.
