What are these Cameras Doing on Sioux Falls Street Signs?

With all the hustle and bustle on Sioux Falls streets days, you'd be forgiven if you didn't notice these cameras attached to certain signs along the city's roadways.

Believe it or not, according to a recent study, Americans are photographed up to 300 times a day, in their cars, walking in and out of buildings, and even on sidewalks.

These cameras were spotted in South Sioux Falls and are part of an ongoing traffic study.

The camera pictured above was spotted on Tennis Lane, next to the BP Gas Station, and was pointed at South Sioux Falls Avenue. On the camera, it wrote, "Traffic Study in Progress, Call 701-271-5032 for more information". I was also told that another camera was set up on 57th street for the study.

Unfortunately, when I called the number, it was no longer in service. I called the Sioux Falls Public Works Department, which pointed me toward KLJ Engineering, the company conducting the study.

After doing some quick online research, I learned that KLJ is a company out of Bismark, North Dakota. After calling the number, I spoke to Ben from KLJ who told me the company is conducting a study on traffic movement for future traffic models and development for the city.

From what limited information I received, I concluded that this could mean a variety of things, ranging from a developer looking to move into the area, to the city possibly changing traffic models on these city streets.

It remains to be seen what will come of this study, but we will keep you posted when any more information comes our way.
