Toss It Out! Be Aware of Large Minnesota Cantaloupe Recall
Some Minnesota residents might not be feeling so great after taking a bite of cantaloupe. The Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture are advising Minnesotans to stay away from cantaloupe.
Whole or cut melons with "Malichita" labeling are being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. Infections are spreading all across the US and Canada.
This is a huge bummer! I love eating cantaloupe in the morning. But if you're a devoted cantaloupe eater like myself, we might have to hold off on buying these melons for now.
Recent stories from Food Safety News and the Food Poison Journal are reporting states that have been affected by the Salmonella outbreak in cantaloupe with "Malichita" labeling including California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. 14 people in the Twin Cities area have become sick and two others have died as a result of this latest Salmonella outbreak.
Food Safety News is recommending Minnesota businesses and cantaloupe lovers to not purchase cantaloupe and toss away any recently purchased melons.
- Consumers, restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers should not eat, sell, or serve recalled cantaloupe or recalled products containing cantaloupe.
- Some consumers freeze cantaloupe for later use. Consumers should check their freezers and throw away recalled fresh food or cut frozen cantaloupe for later use.
- If you cannot tell if your cantaloupe is part of the recall, do not eat or use it; throw it away.
How do you know if you have Salmonella? The Mayo Clinic lists the most common Salmonella infection symptoms:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach (abdominal) cramps
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Chills
- Headache
- Blood in the stool
These symptoms might feel like the stomach flu. If symptoms last more than a few days, then don't hesitate to call your doctor for help!
