It's a decision that will impact someone for the rest of their life.

When Mom and Dad pick a baby name, so many things are part of the process. Do you go with a family name, a popular name, a name from a favorite athlete, musician, or movie star? How about going off the board for something unique?

In South Dakota, parents are going in two different directions depending on whether it's a boy or a girl.

For the boys, the Mount Rushmore State went with the trendy name, Oliver, which, according to new state-by-state data from BabyCenter, is the number one boy name in America (16 states).

As for girls, South Dakota Moms and Dads were much more selective.

The top girl baby name in the state is Sophia, which is number one in only one other state, Connecticut.

Nationally, Charlotte dominates as the top girl name across 16 states.
