Harney Peak Getting a Name Change to Black Elk Peak
South Dakota's highest peak is getting a new name according to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' website. The landmark was named for Army Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led soldiers who killed Sioux Indians in Nebraska.
A federal board decided to rename Harney Peak to Black Elk Peak at a conference early Thursday August 11, 2016. A member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, proposed the change.
At 7,242 feet it has been described by the Board on Geographical Names as the highest summit in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.
