Cure Kids Cancer: Ona Mohlenhoff
By Sanford Children's Hospital
Ona is a little princess. She loves clothes and drawing fairies and princesses, and she has spent quite a bit of time in a castle … Sanford Children’s Hospital Castle of Care.
Ona’s journey began when doctors discovered the unimaginable: a tumor the size of a baseball in her brain. It was an unbelievable diagnosis for her mother to hear and a very scary situation for a little girl to face.
After many months of treatment at Sanford Children’s, the region’s only Children’s Miracle Network hospital, Ona was deemed in remission and stayed that way for 5 years. Unfortunately, in April of 2017, just one month of being deemed 5 years free of disease or “cancer-free”, a new tumor was found in Ona’s brain.
Ona has since had surgery to remove the tumor and started radiation and chemotherapy again to hopefully eradicate the disease once again.
Ona loves art projects and keeping up to date with the latest fashion trends. One day she hopes to be a fashion designer. She’s a fighter and won’t let cancer win. Her motto since she was diagnosed in 2011 has been "cancer can kiss my heinie," and that is oh so true.
