The picture is my campsite and the place I spent at least part of the holiday weekend. I admit it, I'm a city boy, born and raised and am 'plugged in' to everything going on in the world at all times as part of my job in the media. But I decided to unplug for a couple days, I let Sarah and my boss know I was going to be out of touch for 48 hours and off I went to commune with nature.

Now again, I was only going to be gone 48 hours, and if you google someone who can survive in the wild and live off the land, you definitely will NOT see my picture.

So I went to my friends place and pitched my tent on their acreage about a half hour from home. If stuff went south, the house was 100 yards away and the city a short drive. But I still wanted to be self sufficient and yet have most of the creature comforts of home. So along with the big-boy sized tent, also came the double-stuffed, queen-sized air mattress, a couple of coolers and even a battery operated fan!

Add to the fact that my group of best friends was about 100 yards away at the campfire, with a 100 pound pig on the smoker, and most of them playing music (and even encouraging me to get up and play a song with them) it wasn't exactly the middle of nowhere...but it was exactly what I needed. Don't be afraid to try something new, especially if you've got an amazing support group.
