Although all the Eagles are generally happy with their new career-spanning DVD, History Of The Eagles, Joe Walsh admits that watching the doc was tough at times. Walsh, who's been clean and sober for 19 years, explained to The New Zealand Herald, "I was a little uncomfortable with the old footage of me, when I was a mess. But it was important that it was in there, 'cause we were trying to tell the truth. I ended up alcoholic and totally dependent on various other substances. I mean, I had a blast, we all pushed it, but I took it too far. I can't comprehend how I could have done it, how I could have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and all the rest, and stayed up all night and then gone to the next concert and played. But it has a way of convincing you that you can't do anything without it. I played music high for so long, I didn't know how to do it sober."

Walsh finally cleaned up once and for all just prior to the Eagles' 1994 Hell Freezes Over reunion at the urging of his bandmates Don Henley and Glenn Frey: "I'm so grateful that I'm alive, 'cause a lot aren't. I hit bottom before I OD'd and a lot of my friends did it the other way around. . . I don't know why I'm here and they're not but I am here. . . And part of my responsibility is to do a really good job and show people that there is life after total dependency."
