A study conducted at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia shows that despite recent advances in preventing post operative pain, most patients still get stressed out about how they'll feel after surgery.

Researchers looked at patients who were given general anesthesia versus local anesthesia and their expectations regarding their post-op pain. Researchers found in most cases patients actually overestimated the amount of pain - by a lot.

Researchers say it basically boils down to the simple fact that if you expect a bad outcome or a lot of pain after having surgery, you'll probably experience more pain - it really is all in your head.

So remember that the next time you have to undergo the knife for whatever reason - stressing less about pain could lead to feeling less pain. Stressing more about pain will likely lead to you experiencing more pain.
