South Dakota had the second best fiscal condition in the country in 2012, according to a new study by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

The study ranked the state third that fiscal year for cash solvency, 12th for budget solvency, seventh for long-run solvency and sixth for service-level solvency.

While good news for South Dakota, according to Mercatus, the Governmental Accountability Office is pessimistic about states╒ fiscal conditions when they examine the final FY 2013 numbers.

Overall rankings for other Northern Plains States: North Dakota, third; Nebraska fourth; Wyoming, fifth; Montana, ninth; Iowa, 18th and Minnesota 35th.
