Over the past few years, the number of vehicles stolen in Sioux Falls has skyrocketed and the city is trying to do something to bring those stats back down.

The Sioux Falls Police Department is unveiling 'Lock It and Pocket', a new community awareness campaign designed to remind people to secure their vehicles.

'Lock It and Pocket' was made possible by a $50,000 allocation from the Sioux Falls City Council back in June.

Officials say the program is necessary after the number of vehicles stolen in Sioux Falls annually went from 759 in 2019 to 1,495 so far in 2023. That's an increase of nearly 97 percent.

Records show that in more than 80 percent of those thefts, the keys were left inside the vehicle by the owner.
