A Sioux Falls man was taken to a hospital after, police say, another man hit him on the head with a hammer.

Officer Sam Clemens says the two men were among those who were drinking at a residence in the 200 block of North Grange Avenue around 11:30pm Tuesday.

Clemens says at some point the suspect, who is the boyfriend of a woman who lives at that address, was asked to leave.

Another man followed him out to make sure he got into his car to leave, and as the suspect reached his vehicle, he pulled out a hammer and struck the other man in the head.

Clemens says the victim ran, and the suspect chased him for about a block before giving up.

The suspect, 38-year-old Ryan Lee Thompson of Sioux Falls, was arrested at his home on an aggravated assault charge.

The 22-year-old victim needed staples at a hospital to close a wound to his head.
