Project Blue Light Remembers Fallen Officers [VIDEO]

Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthel says officers killed in the line of duty were honored Tuesday night during a service at the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls.

During the holiday season, there will be a Project Blue Light display and tree decorated with blue lights placed at the main north entrance of the Empire Mall.

The City of Sioux Falls website explains more:

Harrisburg Mayor Julie Burke-Bowen is the originator of Project Blue Light in this area and she will provide the opening and closing remarks. The Sioux Falls Police Honor Guard will post the colors to open the ceremony. During the holiday season, there will be a Project Blue Light display and a tree decorated with blue lights placed at the main north entrance of the Empire Mall.

The idea began in 1989 when Mrs. Dolly Craig placed two blue lights in her window during the holiday season. One candle was for her son-in-law, a Philadelphia police officer who was killed in the line of duty. The other was for her daughter, who was killed in a car crash.

Project Blue Light has grown throughout the nation and world. During the holiday season, it burns bright in the hearts of nearly 30,000 survivors of fallen law enforcement.
