Leading Doctors Group Issuing An Unusual Prescription For Parents Of Young Children
A leading doctors group is issuing an unusual prescription for parents of young kids.
In its first ever policy statement on literacy, the American Academy of Pediatrics is urging doctors to advise parents to read to their kids regularly.
They're recommending parents start reading to their kids as early as infancy, because hearing words frequently can help prepare their minds for early language and reading ability.
The lead author of the report, Dr. Pamela High from Brown University, says the benefits were greater than first thought.
"The benefits are so compelling, we're recommending that doctors encourage reading at every check-up. It should become an essential part of health care."
