The 2017 racing season is underway after Sunday's running of the Daytona 500. It was an exciting first race for the now named Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

It was formerly called the Sprint Cup series. I'm still training myself to stop saying Winston Cup.

Call it what you want. The 200 mph stock car gang put on another spectacle at Daytona Beach. It was 200 laps of high speed action on the 2.5 mile track with some crashes.

And it was on the final lap that the winner took the lead. Kurt Busch passed Kyle Larson then held off Ryan Blaney who was charging hard. AJ Allmendinger came in third, Aric Almirola fourth and Paul Menard was fifth. See where your driver finished.

Busch came from the number eight starting position. The rest of the top five came from deep in the field.

Chase Elliott started on the pole and was leading until his fuel tank went dry, leaving the rest of the field fighting for the win. Elliott dropped to 14th.

And there were crashes. The first just past the half way point when a rear tire going down caused Kyle Busch to spin taking out a group of cars including Dale Jr., who was leading.

Then came the "Big One" 23 laps later when Jimmy Johnson, running third, got into contact with Trevor Bayne. Johnson spun across the track causing a 16 car pile up.

It was the first Daytona 500 victory for Busch. It was also the first for Tony Stewart as an owner or driver.
