It’s the Law: Pink Hunting Attire Is Now Legal in South Dakota

Move over blaze orange, you're getting some company in the field in South Dakota.

The option of wearing pink hunting attire is now the law in the Mount Rushmore State.

Tuesday (March 5) at the State Capital in Pierre, Governor Kristi Noem signed HB 1228 in to law. It adds pink to the list of options for required exterior hunting garments.

“This bill is very special because it is the first bill to be sponsored by a father-daughter legislator duo,” said Governor Noem. “I want to congratulate Senator Arch Beal and Representative Jessica Bahmuller on this legislation that gives hunters more options for their hunting garments. I’m looking forward to seeing lots of blaze pink in the fields this pheasant season!”

In February, the bill, which defines hunting garments as a hat, cap, shirt,
jacket, vest, coverall, or poncho) passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 68-1.

It was passed unanimously by the Senate (32-0) 12 days later.

The new law states that all hunters in South Dakota hunters (except when hunting turkey, mountain lion, or duck) must wear orange or pink above the waist to increase their visibility to other hunters. A violation is a Class 2 misdemeanor, which could result in a 30-day jail sentence and/or a $500 fine.
