Sioux Falls fire crews were called to the scene of a house fire in the neighborhood of Marson Drive and South Bahnson Avenue late Sunday afternoon.

KDLT TV is reporting the fire started around 5:30 PM on Sunday (February 26) at home located at 3700 South Bahnson Avenue.

When crews they arrived they found the home filled with heavy smoke and noticeable flames. Crews quickly cut ventilation and sprayed into the roof as well as attacked the blaze from the basement.

According to an eye witness there was a loud bang before the home caught fire. Carla Juhler said, “The whole house just went up really fast. There were kids in the house, there was a man that ran out with two kids and a woman that ran out with one and she fell as she came out the front door.”

Fortunately, all the occupants of the home were able to get out safely according to Steve Fessler, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Battalion Chief. Fessler says, investigators are unsure what caused the fire at the present time. They believe the fire likely started in the garage area but quickly spread throughout the house. It took nearly an hour to contain the blaze.

Crews reported the garage and 5 vehicles were total losses, while the home itself suffered extensive damage due to fire, smoke, and water damage.

The family is currently receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
