The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office has received several complaints reporting that someone is calling and claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.

Here's how the phony call unfolds:

  • First, the caller will tell you that you are delinquent in your taxes and need to send money now or legal action will be taken.
  • Second, they will ask for your social security number to verify that it is indeed you that owes the money.
  • Third, they will ask for your credit or debit card number to pay it in full - or the legal proceedings will begin immediately.

It's important to note that the IRS will never contact someone in this manner.

The numbers that are showing up on caller ID are: (206) 258-7957, and (509) 228-3506.
