Bus Driver Fired For Caring

People around the country are throwing their support behind a Georgia school bus driver after he was recently fired over a Facebook post.

Johnny Cook, a bus driver in an Atlanta suburb, says he was approached by a middle school student who told him he wasn’t allowed to eat lunch that day because he was 40-cents short on his prepaid lunch card. Cook was upset with the school for letting the kid go without lunch and fired off a post on Facebook which read, “This child is already on reduced lunch and we can’t let him eat. Are you kidding me? I’m certain there was leftover food thrown away today.” He even offered to pay for any kid that doesn’t have enough money for lunch.

The school got wind of the post and terminated Cook. The principal doesn’t believe the student’s story, even as the kid is sticking to it. He also says the school has a social media policy which Cook violated with his post. Meanwhile, Cook has been getting thousands of comments and messages of support, even from parents who say the same thing has happened to their kids. So now, the bus driver has created a new Facebook page called Johnny’s Kids, which is aimed at raising awareness of hungry school kids. He’s also considering running for a seat on the school board.
