Puerto Rican boxing legend Hector 'Macho' Camacho died today from injuries suffered in a shooting this week according to the director of the Centro Medico trauma facility, Dr. Ernesto Torres. He was 50 years old.

The former fighter was shot in the face Tuesday by unknown assailants outside a bar in Bayamon, part of the San Juan metropolitan area. A man accompanying Camacho was killed in the attack.

Doctors waited for nearly two days for the test results that showed Camacho, one of Puerto Rico's greatest-ever boxers, had lost the last fight of his life, Torres said.

Camacho's family had disagreed whether to continue life support before finally deciding Friday.

Camacho was shot as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Police reported no arrests and said investigators continued to look for potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters Friday that they were following several leads, but declined to say whether police had identified any suspects. He said very few witnesses were cooperating.
