The best movie soundtracks enhance the viewing experience for the moviegoer, and embody the very spirit of the story being told. While some films will spotlight music as the co-star of the scene, many favorite film moments were enhanced by the subtlety of the music in the background.

Many of the best soundtracks of 2016 can be categorized as more like mixtapes that work hand-in-hand with films. For example, The Nice Guys album features an eclectic mix of '70s tunes that really take one back to the mood of the time. The Edge of Seventeen is a modern mixture of indie rock, pop, and electronic.

The idea of releasing new music with films has, luckily, not been abandoned entirely. Thanks to Trolls, Justin Timberlake fans were treated to a new hit single, while Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping brought an entire album's worth of new music by The Lonely Island.
