The most successful women's basketball player is South Dakota history is calling it quits.

WNBA great, and Rapid City native, Becky Hammon says she's retiring after this season. Hammon made the announcement in San Antonio Wednesday.

Hammon, a graduate of Colorado State, played 16 seasons in the WNBA, beginning in 1999 with the New York Liberty, where she played for eight years.  She spent the last eight years of her career with the San Antonio Stars.

In all, Hammon was named to six All-Star teams, averaging 13 points a game during her career.  She rankes ranks first in WNBA history in free throw percentage (86.9%) percent, and is second in 3-pointers made (817).

WNBA president Laurel J. Richie said in a statement.:

Becky Hammon epitomizes what the WNBA is all about: she has truly shown the world what is possible.

Having gone undrafted in 1999, Becky was determined to make her dream of becoming a professional athlete come true.

Hard work and talent got her noticed and earned her a roster spot, and she never looked back.
