6 Eerie South Dakota UFO Sightings (So Far) in 2023

UFOs or UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) are very popular topics in the online world. We may not live near Roswell but we have plenty of encounters in our area going back decades. These are some reported UFO sightings as recorded at NUFORC in South Dakota in 2023:

"About 9:30-9:40 pm, as I was looking south at the rising full moon in a clear night sky from my back porch, I saw a bright white light cross the sky, coming toward me from south to north; it passed over my home and continued north to slightly north-east. It was moving fast, steady, level, bright, and silent, and was not as high as airplanes usually are." Read full report of this encounter here.

"Sky was clear and blue so it stood out ...I looked up and seen a bright white spot in the sky and we watched it for about an hour before getting the binoculars out to look at it....We tried to take a pic of it but it just showed a white disk in a blue sky... looking through the binoculars you could see it looked almost like a it had a dark line across it and it was white in the center with pink on the top and green on the bottom. I was just yelling you have to see this your are not going to believe what I'm looking at. It was mind blowing just how big this thing was and it looked like it had no lines on it just smooth and round just a giant ring setting there in space." Read full report of encounter here.

"My daughters and I saw about 20 very large, low flying, shiny, white objects moving silently back and forth in a synchronized formation above us. My eldest daughter (13yr.) saw them first, for about 15 seconds, before she ran to tell me. They were flying in a completely unfamiliar fashion. The sky was clear and it was sunny, so we had a sharp view of them. The objects wove around each other, sometimes holding a position and hovering for a few seconds before rearranging. My youngest daughter (9 yr.) believes she saw some of the objects break off and head east, stop, and then vanish." "We noticed two lights in the western sky from Brandon, so these may have been over the northern part of Sioux Falls. The two lights appeared to be coming from the bottom of two craft that looked to the naked eye like they were boomerang shaped, but zooming in on the camera image, the shapes appear to be more like crosses - very thick (height-wise) crosses that would be several times taller than one would expect a plane to be. "Speed was unbelievable. It was Like a high flying jet. starting looking at sky having my last smoke and noticed it moving super fast in Western sky...followed going north, say for 60 seconds then the damn thing headed back south with a sudden stop, headed back south, green circle color and shape." "I was looking up at the sky and facing south, there was a light like a star, I don't know why but I kind of stared up there for about 5 minutes and it just disappeared, no clouds at that time it was clear."

Note: There have been various reports of UFO sightings in South Dakota over the years. These reports are not all that uncommon, as UFO sightings occur in many parts of the world. I don't believe we're going to see little green men walking into Hy-Vee anytime soon, and it's important to note that the majority of UFO sightings can be attributed to natural phenomena, misidentified aircraft or celestial objects, and other explanations that do not necessarily involve extraterrestrial activity.

But these stories and encounters certainly do bring up some curious aspects in our night sky. Perhaps...just maybe...we're not alone?
